Stop Leaking Urine When You Laugh, Cough & Sneeze
With Bulkamid In-Office Injections for Incontinence

Stress urinary incontinence (SUI) refers to a very common condition in which bladder leakage is caused by physical activity – such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, or exercising – that puts pressure on the abdomen. Stress incontinence can be very embarrassing and frustrating, interfering with living a happy and normal life.

But a new treatment for “overactive bladder” can stop urine leaks and give you your life back – without surgery and without downtime.

Northwest Ohio Center for Urogynecology & Women’s Health in the greater Toledo, Ohio area is proud to offer our clients one of the newest and most advanced treatments for stress incontinence, called Bulkamid Transurethral Bulking.

In a nutshell, this non-surgical procedure is a safe, minimally-invasive treatment that thickens and stabilizes the urethra to provide long lasting relief of stress urinary incontinence symptoms.

In this article Toledo board certified urogynecologist and incontinence expert Dr. Andrew Croak explains in lay person’s terms how neuromodulation stops the bladder from leaking at unwanted and inconvenient times.

Understanding Stress Urinary Incontinence

Stress urinary incontinence is very common among adult women of all ages, but its likelihood of occurrence increases as a woman get older. Stress urinary incontinence is caused by a weakness in the muscles that control the bladder. because of these weak muscles, when sudden pressure is put on the abdominal area – by coughing, laughing, sneezing, running, lifting, or exercising – the urethra (the tube that the urine comes out) does not fully close.

Pregnancy, childbirth, being overweight, surgery, trauma, or having a pelvic floor disease or disorder can all cause or contribute to the bladder leaks of stress urinary incontinence.

Bulkamid Urethral Bulking for Stress Urinary Incontinence

Bulkamid is a soft, smooth gel that is made of 97.5% water and 2.5% polyacrylamide. The substance polyacrylamide has been safely used in soft contact lenses for decades, and more recently as a subdermal facial filler in aesthetic treatments.

The Bulkamid gel is injected into the urethra to make it thicker and stronger, restoring the natural closing pressure of the urethra. This keeps the urine from leaking out of the bladder. Additionally, Bulkamid acts as a scaffolding for the body’s own cells to further provide long lasting structure and strength in the urethra – which provides additional protection against bladder leakage caused by stress urinary incontinence.

The Urethral Bulking Procedure

The urethral bulking injections are done right in the doctor’s office, without the need for incisions or scars. A small amount of gel – about the size of a pea or half a teaspoon (2ml) – is injected into 3 or 4 locations in the urethral wall, using a very small telescope.

Urethral bulking is non-surgical so patients do not need to be “knocked out”. A local anesthetic is used to ensure a comfortable procedure, and the process typically only takes 5 to 10 minutes. In most cases patients can get back to their regular daily activities the very next day!

Urethral Bulking Stress Urinary Incontinence Results

It generally only takes an average of 1 to 2 Bulkamid treatments for women, and from one to 4 treatments in men, to achieve optimal results. Multiple treatments will be spaced 3 months apart if they are required.

More than 70,000 patients have already been treated with this revolutionary new treatment for stress urinary incontinence. And three out of four women who have received Bulkamid Urethral Bulking treatment report that their stress urinary incontinence was completely cured or substantially improved.
