Why You Should Choose an Expert for Urinary Incontinence Treatments

At the Northwest Ohio Centers for Urogynecology & Women’s Health, women in the Toledo area can count on seeing board-certified pelvic floor therapists and nurse-practitioners, as well as a fellowship trained urogynecologic surgeon, who are considered nationally recognized experts in the treatment of urinary incontinence.

Our entire staff’s extensive years of training and experience have resulted in progressive, evidence-based incontinence treatments that are highly effective and safe with great long-term success. The many urinary incontinence treatments we offer include:

  • non-surgical MonLisa Touch radiofrequency;
  • pelvic floor biofeedback with intentional mindful muscle control;
  • traditional medicinal therapy;
  • neuromodulation;
  • Botox for the bladder; and,
  • surgical anti-incontinence when necessary.

Don’t Fall for “Fad” Incontinence Treatments

Unfortunately, we live in an era where aesthetic centers, Med Spas and non-pelvic floor specialists are now pandering expensive, unproven incontinence treatments based on technology that has no scientific credibility whatsoever. For this reason, women should be careful to choose their medical providers wisely – by seeking out only specialized doctors who deal with urinary incontinence successfully every day.

At Northwest Ohio Center for Urogynecology & Women’s Health we understand the “pathophysiology” (underlying causes) of incontinence. And we are experts in understanding and treating any contributing medical conditions, such as prolapse. Dr. Andrew Croak is a Mayo Clinic trained, board certified urogynecologist – and the only gynecologic surgeon in the Northwest Ohio area that has been admitted to the prestigious Society of Gynecologic Surgeons.

We can provide a thorough medical examination and evaluation in order to accurately diagnose the cause of your urinary incontinence, and help you choose the right treatment for your specific type of urinary leakage.

Unlike these new, expensive, and unproven incontinence treatments offered by non-specialists, we realize that there is NOT a single “one-size-fits-all” treatment for bladder leakage. There are actually many different types and causes of urinary incontinence. A board certified urogynecologist like Dr. Andrew Croak will be able to diagnose the specific and unique reason(s) for your bladder leaks – and can put in place the best, personalized treatment(s) for your individual situation. And, in most cases, these treatments qualify to be covered by insurance.

Why top OBGYN Urogynecologists do NOT Use Emsella

Despite anecdotal commentary from businesses offering Emsella (the pricey, cash-pay incontinence treatment), many of whom have no pelvic floor expertise, there continues to be a lack of any scientific data to back Emsella’s effectiveness.

The Emsella treatment involves having a woman sit on a electromagnetic chair to undergo a predetermined program of pelvic for contractions that by postulation would strengthen the urinary continence mechanism. In our opinion, this is very similar to the late night infomercial “abdomisizer” fad that swept the airwaves over a decade ago with little or no benefit to the consumers that bought these devices.

Our concern is that because non-pelvic health specialists are using a generic program to stimulate the pelvic floor muscles, there isn’t a proper work up and diagnosis of any pelvic floor dysfunction being done before this treatment as being offered. Legitimate pelvic floor therapy involves mindfully specific toning of the pelvic floor with neuromuscular feedback from the brain to the bladder and back again. There is a real concern that we will see an increase in levator ani spasm and in painful intercourse after these treatments.

Dr. Croak further explains: “We hope that women will not unwittingly invest in what they feel is a quick fix only to be disappointed in Emsella which has not been shown to have any long-term benefit. Most legitimate urogynecologists do not have this equipment within their office because of the lack of evidence based outcomes. We will have to wait and see if this technology provides any benefit in the future.”

Women are wise consumers and should realize that they have many choices within our practice as to how they deal with their urinary incontinence. All of the treatments offered within our practice are covered by insurance with proven evidence-based long-term success and the back up and knowledge to handle any questions or concerns that may arise.
